Tips on buying a kitten
Here at the Cat Breeders Association we have put together a list of handy tips to consider when thinking about adopting a kitten:
• Make sure you consider your decision to adopt a kitten carefully; a cat will require daily care for 10 to 15 years. Ensure you have the lifestyle, time and commitment to suit.
• Decide whether you want to adopt a pure-bred or cross breed cat. Pure-bred cats tend to have fairly fixed personalities so it is easier to find a breed that suits your lifestyle, whereas cross breeds' temperaments are more unpredictable.
• Always visit the breeder you are thinking of adopting from in person.
• Visit more than one breeder to compare their environment, facilities, prices and kittens.
• Make sure you ask about any hereditary diseases that are in either of the kitten’s parent's lines.
• Listen to everything that the breeder tells you and don't be afraid to ask questions.
• Make an agreement in advance on what you both will do if your adopted kitten becomes ill or doesn't settle in at home.
• If you want to adopt a kitten to breed from, or want to take your cat to shows make sure you tell the breeder of your intentions. They can help you find the right kitten for you, and maybe able to give you advice.
