Cat Insurance

Larry, the Downing Street cat, is finally earning his keep and is turning into quite the ministerial mouse catcher.

Larry moved into number 10 last year and after a slow start has finally got in to the swing of things earned his Minister of Mice Catching Status.

Speaking on This Morning David Cameron confirmed that Larry has been busy catching mice.

However, it would seem that one mince is evading Larry’s claws. The Prime Minister took a photo of the particular mouse that is starring in the Downing Street Tom & Jerry show. Whether Larry survives the next reshuffle may depend on his success in the battle.

A case of a three month missadventure

Filed under: Uncategorized — Kwoodhead @ 3:03 pm

Pet InsuranceA cat has been reunited with its owners after he travelled over 400 miles over the English and Welsh countryside.

One year old Charlie went missing from his owners’ home in Tywardreath, near the Cornish coastline just over three months ago.

Natasha Johns was distraught, as any owner would be, when Charlie went missing in mid February. A much loved family pet Natasha, her partner Rob and 2-year old daughter Roxanne put up countless posters in a desperate attempt to find their playful cat.

After 3 months with no word as to Charlie’s whereabouts, Natasha had all but given up hope.

Then at the end of May Natasha received a phone call to say Charlie had been found.

Charlie was found on 19 May in Llanfaethlu, Anglesey, over 400 miles from where he had gone missing.

When she first received the phone call Natasha thought that it was a hoax, but to her amazement the call turned out to be real. Charlie had been traced back to the Family by a phone number on his collar.

Unfortunately, the one year old kitten was in a bad state, in a lot of pain with his collar in bedded into his bed. After some loving vets treatment he was able to be returned to the Johns’ family, who are now planning on having him micro chipped.

The RSPCA believe he might have strayed into a Lorry and made the 400 mile coast to coast journey as a stowaway.

If you have added to your family with a kitten from a Cat Breeders Association member you could be eligable to 12 weeks free insurance. Breeders who register with the Association can pass this and other benefits people collecting a kitten from them. To find out more vist www.cat-breeds.co.uk.

Cat’s ears for humans, whatever next?

Cat lovers show their appreciation of their furry friends in many different ways. Some buy cat keyrings, others have cat tea towels some even go as far wearing cat clothes. However, not many buy and wear cat ears, not least ones that respond to the wearers’ emotional state!

Those clever people at the Japanese electronics firm Neurowear have created a set of fluffy ears that will move depending on the emotional state of the owner.

The ears are said to curl down when you are sad, stand up if you are concentrating, go flat when you are tired and wiggle if you are amused.

The ears are said to work by an electronic headband that picks up brain waves

Videos of the ears show them moving; however it is not clear whether they are truly responding to emotional states as they do seem a little erratic.

However, the concept itself is certainly an amusing one and whether they are scientifically accurate or not.

Stray Kitten finds himself in hot “soup”

Cat InsuranceA stray kitten found himself in hot “soup” after rummage for food saw him get his head well and truly stuck in a soup can.

The kitty was found strolling along the roadside in Kentucky, Louisville, and was taken to a local animal centre.

Distressed and suffering from hypothermia, vets were quick to act using bolt cutters to remove the can and set about treating the potentially life threatening condition.

Luckily the stray responded to treatment. Restored to full health he is now looking for a new home, where he will hopefully stay clear of soup cans.

Kitty Roll

Kitten InsuranceHave you ever wondered why domestic cats roll?

It has been a question that has baffled researchers for some time- with many trying to find the answer.

One researcher that took on the challenge was Hilary N Feldman, from Cambridge University.

Feldman spent six months observing semi Ferrell cats, to see if there were any common triggers of the rolling behaviour.

What she observed was there seemed to be a difference between why female cats roll and why male cats roll.

Female cats seem to roll more in the presence of a male cat, with the objective of attracting a mate.

Meanwhile, male cats seem to roll towards both male and female cats.

Like with female cats, male cats rolling behaviour also appeared to be related to mating – with male cats rolling towards their female counterparts.

However, Feldman also observed that younger male cats would roll towards adult male cats. As the reverse almost never took place Feldman deduced that this sort of behaviour passive submission behaviour, which inhibits the development of aggressive behaviour in male cats.

The claws are out as a new set of models entre the spotlight

Kitten InsuranceFashion store United Bamboo 2011 calendar is a little out of the ordinary, rather that picking female models the store has used feline models to showcase its new collection.

That’s right the new models hitting the “catwalk” and being “cat-ured” on film are cute as can be cats.

The clothing brand has had miniature “cat sized” versions of its new collection made up for the calendar’s photo shoot- taking the term size 0  to a new extreme.

The idea was the brain child of United Bamboo creative director, Miho Aoki ,with the help of his cat TJ.
Speaking in the Daily Mail Miho said:
“I made my kitty TJ’s clothes with extra fabrics from the United Bamboo collection long ago and took pictures with my friend just for fun,

“For some reason, last year everyone around me were a bunch of cat lovers; my pattern maker, my sales person and my assistant.

“So I thought it would be really fun to make some mini kitty United Bamboo pieces that are fun to create for everyone to try on their cats.”

So far the calendar has received a lot of attention from the media and bloggers alike.  Top models had better watch out as these cats have their claws out and are not afraid of a cat fight to the top.

Kitten survives a flushing ordeal

A newly born kitten has survived a kamikaze ride into the Sydney sewers after it was flushed down the toilet.

The kitten’s owner’s 3 year old daughter had been playing with the kitty and is believed to have flushed it down the toilet, not knowing what this would mean.

The pussy cat then became lodged into the toilet’s system, to far in for it to be pulled out via the toilet basin.
The worried owner’s called the fire brigade who embarked upon a five hour rescue mission.
After locating the kitten with a camera on a poll, rescuers used a rod wrapped in cloth to push the kitten further into the sewers.

Once the kitten reached the nearest man hole it was lifted out and to the delight of everyone was in remarkable good health.

Keeping your cats behaviour in check

Filed under: Uncategorized — Kwoodhead @ 2:28 pm

Loveable they may be but many cat owners struggle to train their cats against bad behaviour.

If your cat’s boisterous nature is going a step too far, don’t worry you are not alone and the following tips below could help you train them.

Many cats love to jump up onto surfaces, cute sometime but not so cute when it is stepping worryingly close to a precious vase or tucking into some food left out on the kitchen surface.

Some cats respond to a little spray of water, wetting your cat with a little squirt can help to put them off without hurting them.

You can also prevent your cat going where it is not wanted by minimising the temptation. Remove tempting items, such as food from surfaces, if your cat believes there is nothing worth jumping up for it may keep its paws away from where they are not wanted.

Barriers can similarly work wonders to keep your cat away from where it is not wanted, place some large object such as plant pots at natural access points to stop your cat in its tracks.

Other owners have problems with their cat using furniture as a scratching post, consider buying a post intended to be used as a scratching post from for your cat. Offering them a better alternative can help to keep your furniture claw mark free.

One general bit of advice is to give your cat attention, spending time with them and being patient with them particularly when they are a kitten can help you to gain their trust and stop them picking up any bad habits out of frustration.

Have you just picked a kitten up from a Breeders Association registered breeder? Make sure you register your kitten for the 12 weeks free insurance within 48 hours of acquiring the kitten by visiting www.cat-breeds.co.uk and you can choose from Essential and Essential Plus kitten policies.
