Firefighters in the US can now resuscitate pets

It must be disheartening to firefighters when they save a pet, but the pet still dies because they need resuscitation. Ashland Fire Department in the US has no problem with this as they now own 12 animal oxygen masks and their team of 26 firefighters are capable of performing cardiopulmonary resuscitation on dogs, cats, hamsters, ferrets, birds and reptiles! The whole team of firefighters fully supported the training programme as one of them said: ‘None of them want to be in the situation I found myself in where there is a potential rescue of a pet and not be able to accomplish it.’

Cat lover travels 1,600 miles to France to rescue cat trapped on roof

Cat owner Wendy Wilson told how she travelled 1,600 miles to France to rescue a cat that was stranded on a roof.

Wendy adopted Sandy the tabby cat while living for 16 weeks a year at her holiday home in the South of France.

Sandy became trapped on a neighbour’s roof for 3 weeks without food or water, Wendy was made aware of the situation by her French neighbour and as soon as she found out she booked a flight straight away from Stansted airport.

Ms Wilson said ‘You can’t call the French firefighters like you do in England because they wouldn’t appreciate going out to rescue a cat.’

When Wendy arrived in France she had to wait for her neighbours to arrive home so she could get on to their garage roof and get Sandy down. When she got down she was really thirsty and hungry.

Following the dramatic rescue Wendy decided to take Sandy back to England with her. She said ‘I needed the piece of mind that she was safe and well.’

Recommendations for cat toys!

Cats love to play and their nature is to hunt and chase. Sometimes it’s not practical to let them out and fulfill their natural instincts, but there are lots of toys that can keep them occupied.

The favoured prey for cats are mice and birds, pet shops are full of toys that resemble the shape and size of these animals. But there are also plenty of cheap alternatives that you can use around the home.

They love chasing string and also like sticks, if you drag a stick along furniture or the floor the cat will chase it.

Crumpled paper is another favourite, just crumple it in to a ball and throw it and the cat will chase it around the room.

Even your own hand, if you put your hand under a sheet or blanket and move it around your cat will try and catch it. But make sure you keep an eye out for teeth and claws.

Early signs of success of cat allergy injection

Scientists are developing an injection that they hope will help cat allergy sufferers overcome their symptoms.

Around one in ten people are thought to suffer from some sort of cat allergy with symptoms including itching, watering eyes and sneezing.

Current treatment sees sufferers injected with regular doses of substances that build up their tolerance to allergy triggers.

Researchers hope that the new injection will provide long term protection against symptoms. Cat allergies are triggered when proteins are released from cats’ glands as they clean themselves. The new vaccine works by identifying the specific areas of the proteins that cause the allergic reactions. The isolated proteins are injected into the skin, turning off the T-cells which trigger an allergic response.

Tests on cat allergy sufferers are proving positive, with those injected with the vaccine showing around a 40% reduction in symptoms.

The developers are hopeful that the injection will lead to prolonged tolerance for suffers and a larger scale clinical trial is planned.
