Sleeping with the cats

Pet lover Liz Jones has 17 cats and four dogs. It was said recently that sleeping with your pets is unhealthy, Liz couldn’t disagree more.

For more than two decades Liz has slept with her feline friends and she wouldn’t have it any other way. Infact, she says she would prefer to share her bed with her cats than a man.

A survey showed that 62% of cat owners say their pets either sleep in or on their beds.

Liz even has some steps by the side of the bed for her older cat who is now 22 can climb on to the bed. There is a bowl of water and a bowl of biscuits on one corner incase one of the cats become hungry or thirsty in the night.
When it is cold she leaves the electric blanket turned on all day for the cats.

All 17 of the cats sleep on the bed, the dogs don’t often sleep on the bed because the cats won’t allow it.

Kitty Roll

Kitten InsuranceHave you ever wondered why domestic cats roll?

It has been a question that has baffled researchers for some time- with many trying to find the answer.

One researcher that took on the challenge was Hilary N Feldman, from Cambridge University.

Feldman spent six months observing semi Ferrell cats, to see if there were any common triggers of the rolling behaviour.

What she observed was there seemed to be a difference between why female cats roll and why male cats roll.

Female cats seem to roll more in the presence of a male cat, with the objective of attracting a mate.

Meanwhile, male cats seem to roll towards both male and female cats.

Like with female cats, male cats rolling behaviour also appeared to be related to mating – with male cats rolling towards their female counterparts.

However, Feldman also observed that younger male cats would roll towards adult male cats. As the reverse almost never took place Feldman deduced that this sort of behaviour passive submission behaviour, which inhibits the development of aggressive behaviour in male cats.

A missing cat returned to its home in Liverpool last week, seven years after disappearing. Carol, the owner of the cat put up posters when her kitten Billy went missing back in 2004. She contacted all the local vets and offered a £250 reward.

She had almost forgotten who Billy was when a vet contacted her to say the cat had been found by a lady who had noticed Billy was chipped.
He was taken into Park Vet Surgery by a woman who looks after and re-homes, stray cats.

Carol said she was taken aback by the vets call. She said “I’m thinking Billy, Billy – who’s Billy? I haven’t got an animal called Billy.” She said to the vet “I’ve got three animals but none of them are called Billy.” To which the vet replied, Billy who you lost seven years ago.
Carol still doesn’t know where Billy has been but is convinced that someone had been looking after him because of his good health.
