Kitten survives a flushing ordeal

A newly born kitten has survived a kamikaze ride into the Sydney sewers after it was flushed down the toilet.

The kitten’s owner’s 3 year old daughter had been playing with the kitty and is believed to have flushed it down the toilet, not knowing what this would mean.

The pussy cat then became lodged into the toilet’s system, to far in for it to be pulled out via the toilet basin.
The worried owner’s called the fire brigade who embarked upon a five hour rescue mission.
After locating the kitten with a camera on a poll, rescuers used a rod wrapped in cloth to push the kitten further into the sewers.

Once the kitten reached the nearest man hole it was lifted out and to the delight of everyone was in remarkable good health.

Keeping your cats behaviour in check

Filed under: Uncategorized — Kwoodhead @ 2:28 pm

Loveable they may be but many cat owners struggle to train their cats against bad behaviour.

If your cat’s boisterous nature is going a step too far, don’t worry you are not alone and the following tips below could help you train them.

Many cats love to jump up onto surfaces, cute sometime but not so cute when it is stepping worryingly close to a precious vase or tucking into some food left out on the kitchen surface.

Some cats respond to a little spray of water, wetting your cat with a little squirt can help to put them off without hurting them.

You can also prevent your cat going where it is not wanted by minimising the temptation. Remove tempting items, such as food from surfaces, if your cat believes there is nothing worth jumping up for it may keep its paws away from where they are not wanted.

Barriers can similarly work wonders to keep your cat away from where it is not wanted, place some large object such as plant pots at natural access points to stop your cat in its tracks.

Other owners have problems with their cat using furniture as a scratching post, consider buying a post intended to be used as a scratching post from for your cat. Offering them a better alternative can help to keep your furniture claw mark free.

One general bit of advice is to give your cat attention, spending time with them and being patient with them particularly when they are a kitten can help you to gain their trust and stop them picking up any bad habits out of frustration.

Tabby Kitten takes a 70 mile trip

Filed under: News — Tags: — awardle @ 11:44 am

A ten week old tabby kitten was discovered huddled above the exhaust pipe of a parked car on the Glebe on Bowness last week end.

Local police had received reports from passers by that they had heard
“miaowing” coming from the car park but no one could actually locate the cat.

It wasn’t until 15 year old, Jack Warburton who was working in a café close by enticed the scared moggie from behind the car with a piece of chicken.

PC Steve Sharp of Windermere police, said “It was in a very poor condition when we found it and I don’t think people thought it would survive the night. It was starving and had cat flu. We don’t know how long it had been under there, but it’s likely it had been in there while the owner of the car was driving it.”

Shortly after Jack Warburton and his mum, Belinda called into the police station to let the police know that they would look after the kitten whilst the police found his owner.
Belinda said,” If someone comes to claim him of course we’ll give him back but we’re doing a good job looking after him.   He’s not very well at the moment but we’re experienced with cats and will give him a good home.”

Cafe manager Jane Sorensen said: “I think it’s really nice that it’s going to a good home after such an ordeal.”

Kitten’s find new home

Filed under: News — Tags: — awardle @ 2:42 pm

Just recently, four kittens only eight weeks old who were found left in a field in remote Northamptonshire. They were found taped in a box and subsequently handed over to Tracy Benjamin the Animals in Need cat-coordinator in Kingsthorpe.

The story made the front page of the Chronicle and Echo last weekend and tugged quite profoundly on the heart strings of many who read it.

Ms Benjamin said, “We had an incredible response; the phone just didn’t stop ringing over the week end and now all four of the little ones are going to new homes and we also had 12 other kittens reserved over the weekend.”

One family who were smitten with the kittens were the Galpin family from Kingsthorpe who will adopt two of the kittens have even named them  Beau and Tiggy.

Mrs Galpin said, “We just feel in love when we went to see them.”

Mrs Galpin added that their family is no stranger to taking in abandoned cats. “ We have re-homed abandoned cats before and they have been some of the nicest cats who are just so greateful to have a new start and it is great to be able to give them a loving home. We have another cat called Lulu who is 10 years old and I’m sure she will get on very well with them.”

Cats play with potential new owners over the internet

It may sound like something from a futuristic movie but a cat rehoming centre in America is using the web and robotic toys to allow cats to interact with potential new owners over the internet.

The Oragan Humane Society has launched a website which allows people from all over the world to interact with cats in their centre.

The website allows visitors to control robotic play toys that have been placed with the cats.

Visitors to the site are placed in a queue to have two minutes of interaction with the kitty cats.

The shelter hopes that the interaction with the cats may lead to visitors adopting a cat that they have been playing with.

Early response to the site is said to be a great success, some visitors are returning everyday to play with the cats while the cats are said to love the attention!

The idea is surely a step forward in the cat world, only time will tell whether the technology will be used wider in the cat rehoming and breeding world.

Either way I am certainly curious to try out the interactive technology – the cats in Oragan may have a new play mate in the not to distant future.

Kittens rescused from rubbush tip

Filed under: News — Tags: — awardle @ 3:23 pm

Four gorgeous black and white kittens were abandoned on a rubbish tip in the Bournmouth area over a week ago. If it wasn’t for a passerby hearing their cries they may not have survived.

The story which was reported in the Bournemouth Echo explains that if the cats had not been heard they would have been “minced up”.

Julie Burden manager of the RSPCA clinic in Bournemouth where the kittens are recuperating has highlighted the importance of really considering whether you are able to take on the practical and financial responsibilities of owning a pet.  She explained, “People are not thinking before they are buying animals. They have got to consider whether it’s going to fit in with their lifestyle and whether they have health problems”.
