Cat owner’s love for pink takes a new turn

A cat owner from Swindon likes the colour pink so much, that she decided to dye her cat pink as well to match her own hair colour. She used pink food colouring to make sure it was safe and avoided the fur around the cat’s eyes and nose. ‘It’s my favourite colour, I just love it’ said the owner of the cat named ‘Oi! Kitty’, however the story has not only a sparked an RSPCA investigation, but also much interest from people whose views differ on whether it is acceptable or not to dye your cat’s fur. ‘People have made this massive cruelty thing out of just food colouring. People do it to dogs. You often see it with dogs on TV so what’s the difference with a cat? I would never hurt an animal. It’s just food colourant.’

An animal rescue centre in Kensal Green, London is appealing for help since it has become overrun with  abandoned kittens.

The Mayhew Animal Rescue Centre’s staff have been forced to work round the clock shifts after they have been inundated with new born kittens, many of whom need hand rearing and lots of attention.

Maria Market of the rescue centre stated that, ” It is an amazing feeling to wtch them grow into healthy, strong kittens but my heart sinks for all the ones… who aren’t lucky enough to have been brought in”.

Agent Cat

The names Cat- Elvis the cat!

A new secret agent is on the prowl, more charisma than James Bond more dazzling  than Adam from Spooks, this new agent will use his ‘butter wouldn’t melt’ appearance to catch targets off guard.

Elvis the cat has accepted his mission, this weekend he will be going undercover at the Jura Music Festival on the Isle of Jura in the Hebrides.

Elvis will be trying a special gadget; a camera clipped to his collar which will take pictures of unsuspecting festival goers, capturing snaps that  show the true story of the event.

The pictures will then be published, unedited, on the festival’s website where the victims of the undercover mission will be able to see the evidence that Elvis has captured thought the day.

So if revellers want to stay on the right side of this kitty on a mission, remember he likes his milk shaken not stirred.

Intelligent cat flap

A smart cat flap is helping owners keep control of their cat movements and prevent any unwanted guests from sneaking in via the cat flap.

The Porte Smart Flap is more expensive than your standard cat flap costing between £85 and £100; however some owners are willing to pay the extra for peace of mind over their cat’s movements.

No collar is needed, the cat flap works by reading cats microchip. Owners can programme up to 30 cats microchips into the system.

Owners can also programme the flap so it can only be operated at certain times of day, for example so cats can only leave the house during daylight hours.

Speaking in the Telegraph a spokesman for the company that makes the flaps, Radio Systems, said:

“There have been plenty of smart flaps before, using magnets or infra-red. But this is the first one that does not require a cat to wear a special collar and the first one to use microchips. It is unique and a real breakthrough in cat flap technology.”

Study from the states says almost 60% of cats will wear a collar

While there are many benefits of putting a collar on your cat many new cat owners debate whether a collar could cause more harm than good.

Some owners worry that placing a collar round their felines neck will irritate them or increase the chances of injury, even with modern collars where safety and comfort have become an integral part of the design.

However straying cats are a  big concern for owners and collars and microchips help to make beloved feline friends identifiable.

A new study from Ohi University suggests that in almost 60% of cases cats’ tolerance to collars exceed their owner’s expectations.

The study took a sample of over 300 cats that were given a collar to wear for 6 months. Different collars were used across the sample and at the end of the study the opinion of the owners was sought.

Not only did the study find that cats are more tolerable to wearing a collar that expected, it also found that the success of cats adapting to collars can be down to their owner’s perseverance. Some owners gave up the first time the collar came off, others found that perseverance would lead to their cat happily wearing them after time.

The study’s findings also suggest that key to getting your cat to wear a collar is a fit loose enough for two fingers to be placed between the collar and neck.

While the study may have shown that cats tolerate collars it has done little to solve the debate over whether collars are dangerous.

So what do you think? Do collars cause more harm than good or should they be one of the first items on the list for any new cat owner?

Kitten training tips

Here are some tips to help you train your new kitten when it first arrives at your home…

Train your cat gradually

Training your cat or kitten is a gradual process, so teach him or her something new day by day or little by little. Make sure that they always know where their food and litter tray are, that way they won’t have any reason to feel scared or anxious.

Give your new kitten their own litter box

If there are other pets or cats in your home, make sure you give your kitten their own cat litter tray and be prepared to clean it at least 2 times a day. Never punish a kitten for using the cat litter incorrectly but do give them affection and treats for using it correctly.

Keep your kitten separate from other pets

When you introduce all your pets, supervise them to make sure that they don’t need to be separated.  Many cat trainers recommend giving your kitten a bath before they meet the other pets so that they will smell alike.

Get your kitten a scratching post

Buy a scratching post for your kitten and make it sure that you spend time with them and encourage them to use it. If you find your kitten scratching bits of furniture or the floor, cover the areas with foil or double sided tape. Kittens rarely like the sound or foil and dislike the sensation of getting their paws stuck to the tape.

Paws off the garden birds!

Feline lovers who also enjoy watching their feathered garden visitors from their windows can help to create a sustainable environment in which both can live side by side. Many cat owners receive ‘presents’ from their pets such as dead birds left on the lawn or sometimes dragged through the cat flap. Our love for cats and birds is not mutually exclusive, so the British Trust for Ornithology (BTO) has produced a free guide on cats and garden birds offering advice in a number of practical steps to take into consideration.

An estimated 55 million birds are killed by cats every year, which in the long term can result in the decline of familiar birds such as House Sparrows. Cats do not depend on birds for food as they are well fed at home so their numbers are not threatened. We provide birds with food, bird baths, boxes for nesting, so it is a good idea to give a thought to their safety too. BTO recommends that householders space bird feeders around their gardens so that flocks are spread out and can spot cats easily. Hanging and pole-mounted feeders and bird tables are quite safe for birds, but ground-feeding species are more vulnerable so if you do put food on the ground, make sure it is an open space and away from places where cats can hide. Nesting boxes can be placed in thorny vegetation or protected by chicken wire which will give nesting birds protection from our feline friends. It is good to discourage cats, but do not apply any devices that may harm them. Cats like to have fun in their garden territory and get plenty of exercise climbing and playing and by following a few simple steps, you will be less likely to get a feathery present next time you wake up!

Pensioner refused to be allowed to have kitten due to her postcode

Filed under: News — Tags: — awardle @ 1:31 pm

After her the death of her husband, Margaret Baker aged 75  desperately wanted a cat for companionship.

She picked out Lily, a Bengal from an animal shelter and agreed to go through a standard vetting procedure.  To her horror, she was told that her application has been refused due to her home of 38 years in Norfolk is in too rough an area.

Mrs Baker said in response to the news, “I was numb and just burst into tears.” Molly Cutmore from the Feline Care  East Harling, Norfolk, last night defended the charity’s decision. Mrs Cutmore said, ‘We don’t want to stop people who want one having a cat, but can’t re-home them if we think something will happen.’

She added: ‘We’ve heard reports of people training their dogs to attack cats and there have been cruelty cases on the estate. All of our policies exist for good reasons.’

Mrs Baker has now adopted a cat called Smokey, said: ‘When I went out I realised that when I came back home I hated it. There was nothing to come back to. You could say Ted and I were joined at the hip and we did everything together. Now I’ve got Smokey I don’t mind coming home any more.’

Cat gets lost in transit

Filed under: News — Tags: — awardle @ 1:26 pm

What would you do, if you’re new kitten got lost in transit?

A couple from North Yorkshire whose cat escaped and went missing for several hours at Athens airport have heavily criticise British Airways for their handling of pets.

Kit and Megan Peel have been living in Greece for several years when they decided to return to their home in the Uk in Pateley Bridge, North Yorkshire with their two cats Spartacus and Tancredi.

Whilst BA pride themselves on their handling of animals, Kit and Megan Peel claim that BA’s handling of Spartacus was completely unacceptable.

Mr Peel was travelling through Athens airport and had arranged for the cats to travel on BA Cargo, paying more than 700 Euros for pet tickets.
Whilst their cages were being x-rayed, Spartacus became frightened and broke free from his cage, Mr Peel said, “There was a motorway on one end, there was an airport on the other end, there were lorries being unloaded. It was about the worst possible place you can imagine to lose a cat.”

Mr Peel flew back to the Uk with Tancredi, the Peel’s asked their Greek friends to try and fins Spartacus. Hours later Spartacus was found.  Mr Peel flew back to Athens the nest day and was reunited with Spartacus.

BA has released a statement, “ Our staff ar Athens airport searched for Spartacus for 45minutes and used his favourite food to try and lure him back. We were delighted he was found safe the next day and flew him back to London without charge.”

“ BA carries thousands of pets on our global network each year and our cargo team in Athens has received accolades for their handing of pets.”

Kit and Megan Peel have set up a Facebook group called Justice for Spartacus to get better facilities for pets travelling on airlines.

If you own a cat or a kitten, make sure you get cat insurance to cover your beloved pet against many unexpected eventualities.
